Identifying Your Visitors Before Letting Them In

Door entry systems are a convenient and secure way to control access to a building or property and provide commercial property owners with the reassurance that they can control, monitor and – if necessary – restrict the movement of people in and around a premises or site.

Types of Door Entry Systems

Audio based systems

Consist of a panel outside the entrance door (with one or more buttons) and a wall-mounted handset inside. When a visitor presses the call button, the handset will ring and a two-way conversation can be held. The person inside can then release the door by simply pressing a button.

Go one step further and usually incorporate a monitor in the handset and a camera at the point of entry. Available in monochrome or colour, they allow you to see visitors before allowing them to enter the property. You can even use the system to check ID badges by asking visitors to hold them up to the camera.

Can be adapted to meet a number of requirements, from simple one button systems to multiple button panels for multi-occupancy buildings.

Concierge systems

Allow calls to be intercepted from both the apartment and the door panel, greatly improving co-ordination of the facility. Both types of systems can also be set up to open barriers or gates, as long as they use electronic automation.

A range of advanced features can also be built in, including privacy of speech (preventing interference from other handsets), and timers to record the time of calls, door releases, and even the duration of conversations.

Door Entry Installation

Door entry systems can be integrated with existing features, including access control, telephone lines and CCTV. For example, footage from a door entry system can be recorded and monitored along with other CCTV output. A range of finishes are available too, so that modern handsets and monitors can be integrated into existing decor. (from the current ai-security website)

Benefits

Cheaper Insurance

The British Security Industry Authority recently held discussions with the Association of British Insurers and the talks highlighted the fact that insurers would find it useful if the level of security offered on a site is specifically defined.

Cost-effective
and efficient

No need to change locks or re-issue keys if they are lost or stolen or staff members leave; all the manager needs to do is centrally reconfigure the key fobs to deactivate them.

Ability to
create zones

Systems can be designed and programmed so that access to different areas of the site can be controlled even among staff members.

DOOR ENTRY FAQ

The cost of a door fob system can range from £1,000 to £3,000 for a small business or residential building for the hardware and installation. This includes the fob readers, control panel and initial set of fobs. For larger more complex systems with extra features like integration with other security systems or multiple entry points the cost can be £5,000 or more. Ongoing maintenance and extra fobs will also incur additional costs.

  • Door entry systems are used to control access to a single entry point, such as the front door of a building. These systems often include intercoms, keypads or fob readers and allow or deny access based on input from the person requesting access.
  • Access control systems are more comprehensive and can control access to multiple areas of a building or across several buildings. Access control systems include features like role based access, who entered where and when, and integration with other security measures like CCTV and alarms. A door entry system may be part of an access control system but the latter is generally more advanced and controls access across the whole facility.

The cost of a buzz-in door system which allows remote unlocking of a door via a button or intercom system can range from £300 to £1,500 for the system and installation. The lower end of the range is for basic audio only intercom systems, the more expensive systems will include video intercoms, multiple door controls or smartphone app integration. For larger buildings or systems with extra features like video recording or access control integration the cost will be more.

A door entry system can connect to a home phone through a system called a phone entry system. Here’s how it works:

  • Intercom Connection: The door entry system is installed at the entrance, usually with a keypad or intercom unit. When someone requests entry the system dials a designated phone number.
  • Home Phone Integration: The system can be set up to call your home phone (or mobile phone) when someone presses the call button at the door. You can then speak to the visitor and if you want can press a button on your phone to unlock the door remotely.
  • Wired or Wireless: These systems can be wired directly to the phone line or wireless depending on the setup.
  • VoIP Integration: Modern systems can also integrate with VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services so you can receive calls from the door entry system via an app on your smartphone.

Yes, electronic door locks are worth it for several reasons:

  • Convenience: Keyless entry is more convenient than carrying and managing physical keys.
  • Security: Many electronic locks have advanced security features like temporary access codes, remote locking/unlocking and integration with home security systems.
  • Access Control: You can control who has access to your property, often with the ability to track entry times and revoke access codes as needed.
  • Integration: Many electronic locks can integrate with smart home systems for extra control and automation.

While they can be more expensive than traditional locks and require some maintenance (like battery replacement) the added convenience and security is worth it for many users.

An IP door entry system is a door entry system that uses Internet Protocol (IP) to transmit data, over a network. Unlike traditional analog systems IP door entry systems have several advantages:

  • Remote Access: Users can manage and control the system remotely via the internet, using a smartphone, tablet or computer.
  • High Quality Video: IP systems often support high definition video for clearer communication and better security monitoring.
  • Scalability: IP systems are more scalable, you can add extra entry points or features without major reconfiguration.
  • Integration: They can integrate with other IP based systems like IP cameras or VoIP phones for a more comprehensive security setup.

Electronic door locks are powered in one of the following ways:

  • Batteries: Most electronic door locks are battery powered, usually with AA or 9-volt batteries. These batteries can last several months to a few years depending on usage. The lock will often give a low battery warning so you have time to replace them.
  • Wired Power: Some electronic locks are hardwired into the building’s electrical system. This provides a constant power supply and no battery changes are required but installation is more complex and may require professional assistance.
  • Backup Power: Many electronic locks with wired power have a battery backup so the lock will still function in case of a power outage.
